Adeleke forms a committee to address sexual assault

Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has formed an action group to address sexual assault using mobile courts and other strategies.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the Osun State Government came to certain resolutions, which are being carried out by this action.

The governor, during a visit to the Federal Minister of Women Affairs, reaffirmed his commitment to the prompt implementation of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum resolution for the establishment of Mobile Courts devoted to addressing issues of sexual and gender-based violence, child abuse in the form of street begging, and expedited trial of women and children held in correctional facilities, according to a statement signed by Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

He said that he had instructed his Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to draft an executive order releasing all wrongfully imprisoned women in the state in observance of Lent, Easter, and Ramadan.

“To further protect women’s rights, the Justice Ministry will assemble a list of impacted women throughout the state who will receive executive pardons,” he declared.

“Governor Adeleke has established an action committee made up of the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Hon. (Mrs.) Ayobola Awolowo; the Commissioner for Federal Affairs, Hon. (Mrs.) Adenike Adeleke;

and the Attorney General, who will be represented by the Governor’s Special Advisor on Legal Matters, Barrister Nurudeen Kareem, in order to implement the resolutions reached with the Federal Ministry in accordance with the position of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.

Other notable figures are the Hon. Moshood Olagunju, Commissioner for Youth Development, and Abisola Ariwodola, Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) for Osun State.

“It is the committee’s responsibility to implement the statement from the combined meeting of the state governor and the federal minister of women’s affairs.”
