Obaseki confirms Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as Shaibu’s replacement

Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has sworn in Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as the state’s new deputy governor.

The godzgeneralblog reported that Omobayo replaced Philip Shaibu, who was impeached by the State House of Assembly on Monday morning.

The House of Assembly impeached Shaibu following the acceptance of the impeachment panel’s findings, led by Justice S. A. Omonua (rtd).

The panel was formed by the Chief Judge of Edo State to investigate claims of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.

Eighteen of the 20 parliamentarians who attended the plenary on Monday, April 8, 2024, voted in favor of the impeachment, with one voting against.

According to the newspaper, the former deputy governor was found guilty of leaking government official secrets. However, he was found not guilty of the perjury charge.

Following the impeachment, Obaseki quickly swore in Omobayo to succeed Shaibu.

Omobayo is from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, which is part of the Edo North Senatorial District that also includes the impeached deputy governor.

Omobayo, who was born on July 19, 1986, is described as a “seasoned engineer with a proven track record of progressive professional experience in the oil and gas sector”.

His profile indicated that he holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an Msc in Public Administration from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

He is a registered member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

He works as a Senior Maintenance Engineer for Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, where he gained valuable experience in the South South region.

The new deputy governor is known to be involved in politics in his local government district.
