Saturday, February 3, 2024, will see re-runs and by-elections in nine afflicted states of the federation, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the report, the heads of the state legislatures and the National Assembly (the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives) have announced the openings of these positions.

The schedule and timetable for conducting by-elections due to the resignation or death of members of the National Assembly and state houses of assembly have been approved, according to a statement issued on Friday by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

The nine states in the federation were represented by the two senatorial districts, four federal seats, and three state constituencies that had vacancies, according to Olumekun.

In addition, he mentioned that certain election petition appeal tribunals had ordered the Commission to hold re-run elections following the 2023 general election.

These elections have been mandated by the court and will impact 35 constituencies at this time. Three of them have whole constituency, while the others include a smaller number of voting units. On Saturday, February 3, 2024, all impacted constituencies are expected to hold both types of elections concurrently.

In order to assist political parties and candidates as well as the general public, Olumekun states that the commission’s website and social media platforms have uploaded the election schedule along with detailed delimitation data, including names of registration areas, polling units, the total number of registered voters, and PVCs collected.
