The next big thing for the Super Eagles is Victor Boniface

In the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal between Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham, Victor Boniface scored his first goal after recovering from injury.

When he came off the bench with the score still 0-0, there was an air of certain outcome.

In the 83rd minute, Jonas Hofmann’s volley came sailing past the packed six-yard box to break the tie.

In the ninetieth minute, Hofmann changed roles again, when Boniface flicked home his inviting cross to give Xabi Alonso’s team a significant lead going into the second leg the following week.

Boniface might win the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen this weekend before that match at the London Stadium.

If Xabi Alonso’s team fails to secure the victory against Werder Bremen at home, they will have another opportunity to do so away against Borussia Dortmund.

It will happen at this point.

Leverkusen leads Bayern Munich by 16 points at the top and needs just one more victory to secure the title.

It just matters when for a squad that hasn’t dropped a game this year.

It looks like Boniface will become the first Nigerian to win the German championship.

To put things in perspective, his countrymen Victor Agali, Jonathan Akpoborie, Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, and Sunday Oliseh were unable to accomplish the goal.

In 26 games in all competitions, the 23-year-old has contributed 17 goals and 9 assists, making him a vital part of Alonso’s outstanding squad.

The injury that kept him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations disrupted his campaign.

In the end, the Super Eagles fell to the hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, 2-1. However, many observers believe Nigeria would have won the tournament handily if Boniface had been fit.

Given the team’s performance throughout the tournament, it’s unclear how Peseiro would have utilized him. Perhaps it was the team’s style of play because of his absence. Who knows?

ACL Sports CEO Calvin Onwuka tells godzgeneral, “I hope whoever becomes the new Super Eagles manager ensures he is used in the right system to bring out the best in him.”

It’s been interesting to watch Boniface ascend to the top.

He was playing for Union St Gilloise in Belgium just the previous season.

However, Alonso’s potential drove him, and Bayer spent more than €20 million to sign the striker.

Many elements, in Onwuka’s perspective, have helped Boniface develop into one of the young, shining stars of European football.

“Have the good fortune to be at a Leverkusen whose time is now, along with talent, hunger, and ambition.

These things defy intelligent human computation.

He clarifies, “The challenge is how he delivers from next season onward.”

After putting up impressive performances for the German team, Boniface is currently being connected to elite European teams like Napoli, AC Milan, and Arsenal, where he may take Victor Osimhen’s place.

Onwuka, however, suggests that Boniface stay in Germany like his manager.

Prior to the upcoming season, Alonso was strongly predicted to sign with either Bayern Munich or Liverpool.

However, the Spaniard has made it clear that he intends to play for the team for at least one more season.

Onwuka continued, “Boniface should stay for one season.”

“But his career is short, so he should take any opportunity to play for one of the big clubs in the Premier League or La Liga.”
